Audi cars can be pricey though, with the compact range like the A1 selling at a starting price of £14,530 and higher-end models like the R8 starting at £119,520. Nevertheless, with its flawless sporty styling and impressive performance, you can be sure you are buying a level of solidity that is hard to beat!

Built to Impress, Built to Last

Audi cars are all about speed, appearance and performance. Whether it’s a hatch or a luxury sports car, every Audi car is delightfully good looking and satisfying on the road.

Some of the most innovative cars today belong to the Audi range. One of the many technologies the automaker pioneered is the Audi Space Frame or ASF, which was introduced in the A8. This advanced feature saves weight and improves torsion rigidity, making the A8 the lightest and most fuel efficient all-wheel drive in the full-size luxury segment.

The company also showcases impeccable German engineering with their 100% galvanised cars. These full-body zinc coated vehicles are highly resistant to corrosion and has a longer lifespan.

Audi also pioneered LED DRLs (daytime running lights) in their products. The technology was first implemented in the Audi R8 W12 and has since spread throughout the entire model series.

Fuel Economy in an Audi

You would think the sporty Audi models are huge gas guzzlers, what with their impressive speed. Surprisingly, nearly all petroleum burning models including the A3, A4, A6 and A8 now incorporates the Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) engines. This fuel-saving technology replaces the ageing 1.8-litre engine found in older Audi models.

The Audi Origins

Audi AG has a complex history. It was created in 1909 by August Horch, a well-known engineer and automobile pioneer in Germany. Horch built it to rival A. Horch & Co., a car company he previously founded but which he left due to a dispute with his former partners.

Audi was originally called Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH. However, Horch’s former partners contested that the name Horch was already a registered trademark, the legal rights to which they already own. As such, August Horch used the Latin translation of his name instead, and his company was consequently called Audi Automobilwerke GmbH.

The Audi brand is known for its sporting achievement, a tradition that the company established at the very outset. August Horch, thanks to his victories in the Austrian Alpine Runs (1911-1914), successfully made Audi internationally known within a short span of time. Horch later withdrew from the company after the WWI.

In the 1960s, the Audi brand was acquired by Volkswagen from Daimler-Benz. It was successfully relaunched with the introduction of the Audi F103 in 1965. But its present day form essentially took off in 1969.

Diversity in the Audi Line-up

Audi’s Quattro coupe arguably led the way in mainstream four-wheel drive in the early 1980s, a success that contributed to the brand’s popularity. The German automaker continues to build on this sector, with a strong line-up of SUVs: the Q3, Q5 and Q7.

In recent years, Audi has expanded with an extensive line-up ranging from compact sedans and hatches to luxury sedans, SUVs and high performance sports cars. Most models feature petrol and diesel engine options, with some featuring the Quattro all-wheel drive system.

The Audi car ranges include the Q3, Q5, Q7, R8, RS, TT and the A-Series (A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8), with the A8 as the brand’s luxury halo car. The RS range boasts high performance upgrades, while the R8 sets the bar for road performance and flawless handling. Many Audi models are available in coupe, sedan, hatch, wagon or convertible variants.
